How Rare Is Thanksgiving Snow In New Jersey?

We are not expecting snow this Thanksgiving, but has it ever happened before in New Jersey?

The answer is yes, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac, but it is very rare around here. So, let's take a look at the history of New Jersey Thanksgiving snow.And let's count our blessings we don't have to deal with it this year.

One Thanksgiving snow in New Jersey was part of what the Almanac considers one of the top 5 most historic Thanksgiving storms and it took place in 1989. Newark broke a record with 6 inches that day.

But that storm was way worse well north of us. Long Island got hit with 9 inches. New York got a little less than North Jersey, with just under 5 inches of snow on that Turkey Day 30 years ago.

You may also remember the Thanksgiving Eve Winter Storm Watch of 2014 for most of North Jersey as well. But once again the Jersey Shore was a little too far south to deal with this one as well.You can read about that at nj.com.

For the record, our Chief Meteorologist Dan Zarrow says we will have no such issues this Thanksgiving. As a matter of fact, we'll have a mix of sun and clouds and a high of 50, and it will also be pretty windy.

And we'll take that over snow any day.
