Wear your seatbelt or get a ticket in Ocean County, starting today
Wearing a seat-belt is not the cool thing to do, it's the legal and safe thing to do, so just do it.
If you don't, especially if you're driving, you'll get a ticket.
There will, however, be extra sets of eyes on Ocean County roads for the next couple weeks though as the county and Sheriff Mike Mastronardy announced that they will be taking part in the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety grant funded Click It or Ticket Program, which begins today.
“The New Jersey seatbelt law requires all motor vehicle passengers in the front and back seats to buckle up,” Ocean County Sheriff Mastronardy said in a statement. “A police officer may stop a vehicle and issue a summons for violations of this law. Wearing a seatbelt, regardless of seating position, increases your chances of surviving a crash by as much as 75 percent. This is an important step in keeping with safe driving.”
The current campaign will run in Ocean County until June 6 and patrols set up in targeted area to enforce seatbelt laws.
There are more than 618 miles of county roads, according to Ocean County officials, which they said is "the largest county road network in the state."
“As we approach the summer season we see the number of people in Ocean County more than double,” Ocean County Commissioner Jack Kelly, Director of Law and Public Safety, said in a statement. “Wearing your seatbelt is just one simple step you can take to make traveling safer for you and your loved ones.”
Ocean County officials said there were 122 crashes in 2020 that involved an unrestrained occupant, according to metrics they pulled from the Numetric crash tool, and of those 122 crashes, 66 had injuries involved and six tragically ended in death.
“Using seatbelts saves lives and reduces serious injuries,” Ocean County Commissioner Director Gary Quinn said in a statement. “I commend the Sheriff and his officers as they take part in the national Click It or Ticket grant program in order to deter drivers from being unrestrained while operating a motor vehicle in the County.”
Bottom line...buckle up, not just to avoid getting a ticket but to avoid an injury or worse.
