Legislation makes it easier for National Guard members to access benefits

Veterans who have served in the National Guard will be able to use their discharge forms to obtain a county veteran's ID card under legislation that has been approved by the New Jersey Assembly.

The bill, co-sponsored by Jersey Shore Assemblyman Sean Kean and Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce makes it easier for retired National Guard members to access county military benefits.

This legislation was approved by the Senate last July and it now moves to Governor Phil Murphy’s desk for consideration.

“It should be an easy process for these brave men and women to obtain a veteran’s identification card or the veterans designation on their license,” Kean (R-Monmouth) said. “This legislation ensures veterans who served in the National Guard who have NGB-22 forms are eligible for benefits they earned.”

“New Jersey takes great pride in the programs and services available to our veterans,” DeCroce (R-Morris) said. “Former members of the guard should be able to take advantage of them, too. This makes it easier for Guard veterans to get benefits they need.”

There are more than 8,300 guardsmen enlisted in the New Jersey Army and Air National Guard.
