We talk about this law every year because it is kind of bogus.

But bogus or not, I want to give you a heads up to your money doesn't go flying out of your car window right before the holiday season.

According to NJ.gov, it is technically illegal to leave your car running in your driveway to warm it up because it results in the, "release of air contaminants into the air in New Jersey, including fine particulates and air toxics."

In past years, I have always thought that this law is obnoxious and unnecessary. But I did some research on the NJ.gov website and here is the reasoning I found:

"Every year, hundreds of New Jerseyans die prematurely from exposure to diesel exhaust. Fine particle pollution may actually cause more deaths in NJ than homicides and car accidents combined."

Okay....now I feel bad for moaning and groaning as much as I did.

So this is obnoxious but it is for the good of us all. And if you choose not to listen, it will cost you big time.

You could get hit with up to $1,000 in fines!  YEAH....that is a chunk of change.

According to NJ.Gov, there are a few exceptions:

1. You can leave your car running for up to 15 minutes if it has been stopped for at least 3 hours. But this rule only applies if the temperature outside is 25 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.

2. Buses can be idle for up to 15 minutes to drop off or pick up passengers. (Because throwing passengers out of a moving bus is clearly not an option)

3. You cannot idle in a parking space with available electrification technology (Okay, I see the safety issue here)

Otherwise, don't even think about leaving your car running and unattended.

The first violation will cost you $250, the second will cost you $500, and the third and each subsequent violation will cost you $1,000.

I guess just be aware. You have up to 3 minutes before you technically break this rule so start your car, run and get your coat and off you go.

Plus something to keep in mind: A lot of us in New Jersey are still working from home. This rule may not even affect your daily routine all that much!

Let's just all do our best.

Take a look at the official law HERE or HERE if you have any questions.
