Greetings kids….it’s Bozz! Long time, no blog, not in over 2 years actually. I took a little hiatus. And the world is a little different of course. A big thanks to Andy Chase and Bradley James for setting me up with the tools to write and publish my own blogs.

2020 has been a challenging year for all of us, every walk of life and every industry, especially sports. Aside from the major sports, many horse racing fans like myself were very pleased that the sport of kings continued on, despite having no fans in the stands. The triple crown series wasn’t even in the correct order of finish, so to speak: The Belmont in June, Kentucky Derby in September and The Preakness in October.

Well the last hoorah for horse racing this year, that being the Breeders Cup championships are taking place this weekend in Keeneland, KY. The 2-day event kicked off yesterday with the juvenile races. Today consists of a full card of world-class horse racing, capped off with their signature event, the Breeders Cup Classic. There are a couple of Jersey Shore-connected horses running today.

Firenze Fire, running in the Breeders Cup Sprint, is trained by Monmouth Park-based trainer, Kelly Breen. The horse is also owned by Ron Lombardi of Mr. Amore Stables based in Mountain Lakes, NJ.

Another Shore-connected horse entered today is Horologist, running in the Breeders Cup Distaff. This horse was bred in NJ at Holly Crest Farm based in Middletown. Among the field she’ll be running against is Preakness winner, Swiss Skydiver. Horologist is trained by Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, who took over the training duties following the passing of another Monmouth Park-based trainer, the late John Mazza.

The favorites for the Breeders Cup Classic are Tiz The Law, Maximum Security and Improbable. You know I usually go with long shots. But this time, I’m actually going with one that is not a long shot, and it features my name: Tom’s d’Etat.

Breeders Cup coverage gets underway at 12 Noon on NBC Sports Network and then on NBC at 2pm. Post time for the Breeders Cup Classic is 5:18pm.
