The Centers For Disease Control has listed influenza like illness activity in the Garden State as "high" for the week ending January 6th, the most recent data available on the CDC website.

Flu activity is affecting every state throughout the nation, with every state in the continental U.S. reporting "widespread" flu activity, and New Jersey is no exception, according to the CDC.

To make matters worse, this years national outbreak is the worst one since the CDC began keeping records, according to news12.com, and this flu shot is only between 30 and 40 percent effective against this season's most common strain.

So, what do you do to avoid getting the flu this season?

The CDC says some of the most effective ways include getting the flu shot, try to avoid those who are sick, and wash your hands frequently. They also recommend that if you do have the flu to stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.

And remember, the fever needs to be gone for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medicine. Hopefully, you can use these tips to avoid the flu altogether, but if you do get it, you may want to talk to your doctor about antiviral medications.
