I had a great time serving as MC for The Jack Levy Sportsmanship Awards ceremony Sunday at the RWJBarnabas Health Arena.  Our Shore Sports Network partnered with the Shore Conference of High Schools to salute 94 seniors who best represent their schools focus on sportsmanship.  In addition to honoring a male and female from each school there were several special awards with Jason Corley of Long Branch and the recently-retired Pete Pansuka of Brick recognized as Monmouth and Ocean County Athletic Directors of the Year.

Posthumous awards went to Warren Wolf for a lifetime of achievement as a coach and so much more while the late Jack Levy was saluted with the association’s service award.  The sportsmanship awards have been renamed in his honor…Levy, the former Shore Regional Athletic Director, passed away in March.

Through the generosity and support of ProCare Rehabilitation four of the honored students were randomly selected to receive $500 scholarships.  They were Christina Inman of Lacey (Juniata College), Alexandra Muscillo of Shore (Wingate University), John Schulter of Point Beach (North Carolina State) and Geoff Schroeder of Rumson (Johns Hopkins University).

Special thanks to the athletic directors for placing importance on recognizing these athletes who lead by example on and off the field.  Will Sundermann of Pinelands Regional if finishing up his time as President of the AD’s group and I certainly appreciate his confidence in working with our Shore Sports Network.  Brick Memorial’s Ed Sarluca headed up the awards committee and was instrumental in putting together an outstanding event for the athletes and their families.  Once again the Toms River Regional School District stepped up to host the awards breakfast for 400 and for that I thank Ted Gillen and his support staff.

After two years without being able to come together for this celebration it was sure nice to be back and here’s hoping we can do it again next May,
