Adrenaline Shore Conference Baseball Monday Scoreboard and Postponements, 5/16/22
Shore Conference Tournament
(14) Southern 8, (19) Barnegat 2
Senior Stephen Stafford jumpstarted a seven-run first inning by Southern with a two-run double to open the scoring and the Rams quieted the Bengals the rest of the way to advance to the round of 16 Tuesday against No. 3 Middletown South.
After Stafford staked Southern to a 2-0 with his double, the Rams scored their next four runs on non-hits. A throwing error allowed two more runs to score and increase the lead to 4-0, followed by an errant pickoff that led to the fifth run and a wild pitch that plated the sixth.
Junior Steven Miller capped the seven-run first with an RBI single.
Stafford also doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and scored on an RBI single by junior Brian Harper that extended the lead to 8-0.
Barnegat broke up the shutout by Southern pitching with two runs in the top of the sixth. The first scored on a bases-loaded double-play and senior Patrick tacked on another with an RBI single.
Monday's game was a do-over of Saturday's originally-scheduled first-round Shore Conference Tournament game between the local rivals. Southern tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning before Barnegat came back with the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth. With none out, the bases loaded and the score 2-1 in favor of the Bengals, the game was stopped due to steady rain and poor field conditions and eventually called altogether.
Barnegat used Rider-bound right-hander P.J. Craig for 110 pitches, making him ineligible to return to the mound. Southern also did not have Miller available after the junior left-hander threw 108 pitches as Saturday's starter for the Rams.
Shore Conference Tournament regulations do not allow for suspended games. Any game that advances past the fifth inning and is called by the umpires must revert back to the score at the end of the last completed inning. If the score was tied at the end of the last completed inning, SCT rules state the game is to be restarted from the first inning.
Any game that is called by the umpires prior to the end of the fifth inning (or the end of the top of the fifth inning if the home team is leading) is considered incomplete and would also be restarted. A game that advances into the sixth inning and is called with one team leading, the team with the lead at the end of the last completed inning would be deemed the winner.
The rule is based on the NJSIAA's protocol for games that are called due to rain, darkness, playing conditions, etc. Regular season games that are called under the same circumstances as Saturday's initial game would be considered a tie, but because one team had to advance, the game was replayed in its entirety on Monday.
