The Coast Guard made a daring rescue in the Jersey Shore waters just off Barnegat Inlet on Thursday (November 5th) as a pair of fishermen were about to abandon their burning boat that had become engulfed in flames and thick smoke.

Photos and video provided by the U.S. Coast Guard District 5 shows how precarious the situation truly was when they arrived as black smoke billowed from the vessel.

According to a Thursday afternoon press release, Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay got a mayday call from the fishermen saying that their 53-foot fishing boat's engines were engulfed in flames.

In the open waters 34 miles east of Barnegat Inlet, the fishermen had their life vests on and were getting ready to abandon the boat in favor of their life raft.

The press release from the Coast Guard said that rescue crews scrambled from a trio of Jersey Shore stations, with a helicopter and two rescue boats deploying from Atlantic City, Manasquan Inlet, and Barnegat Light respectively.

Thankfully, the press release goes on to say that both men were hoisted into the helicopter from their life raft and flown to safety without any reported injuries.

Atlantic City based Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Matt Devlin said that, "..."Today's case was a perfect example of a unified effort between prepared boaters, the sector, small boats and the air station."
