Class A North

No. 5 Middletown South 16, Long Branch 0 (5 Innings)

Junior Joe Bartos went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI and senior Joe Stanzione was 3-for-4 with a double, five runs and an RBI to pace the Eagles (6-2, 5-1) to a win over the Green Wave (0-6, 0-6).

Middletown North 1, Manalapan 0

Senior Colin Dowlen pitched a four-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and senior Aiden Sheehan delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh as the Lions (3-3, 3-3) overcame another dominant performance by Manalapan ace Tyler Kane to edge the Braves (1-4, 1-3).

Dowlen allowed just one walk in his overpowering outing and finished his day by striking out the side in order in the top of the seventh. The Seton-Hall-bound right-hander then led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and after a failed sacrifice, a hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch, Sheehan punched the ball over a drawn-in infield to plate the winning run.

Dowlen finished 2-for-2 with a walk at the plate.

Kane allowed one run for the third straight outing to open the season and dropped to 0-2, with each of his losses coming by a score of 1-0, with Kane going the distance. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out six.

No. 2 Howell 9, Marlboro 8

After giving up the lead on the mound in the top of the seventh inning, senior Nick Gomes belted a two-out, game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Rebels a thrilling win over the Mustangs -- their seventh straight to open the season.

Senior Nick Todisco worked a two-out walk to extend the inning and Gomes slammed a shot into right field that gave the Howell catcher a chance to rumble home with the winning run.

Marlboro fell into an early 4-0 hole, but scored two runs each in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the top of the seventh, senior and losing pitcher Josh Mack launched a game-tying, two-run home run with two out to give the Mustangs new life.

In the top of the sixth, Marlboro took its first lead on a two-out, two run double by senior Julian Umanzor, making it 6-4.

Howell responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, with Todisco tying the game with a two-run home run. Junior Russell Halvorsen and senior Thomas Strauch later worked back-to-back, bases-loaded walks to give the Rebels an 8-6 lead.

After scoring a pair of runs on an error in the bottom of the first, Howell extended its lead to 4-0 in the third on a two-run home run by sophomore Joe Zito.

No. 9 Colts Neck 2, No. 10 Manasquan 1

Nick Carrell's ground ball with two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh was played into an error and the Cougars rallied from a 1-0 deficit in their final at-bat to stun the Warriors and sweep the regular-season series.

Senior Brad Salamone led off the inning with a single and made it to third on a passed ball and wild pitch on consecutive pitches. Senior Dave Cohen wasted no time, smacking the next pitcher through the left side of a drawn-in infield to tie the game.

Manasquan jumped out to a 1-0 lead when junior Brett Patten singled and reached third on a two-base fielder error in the outfield, then scored on a two-out throwing error.

For the second straight outing, Colts Neck senior left-hander Anthony Gubitosi responded to an unearned run against him in the first inning by going on a strikeout tirade. The Delaware-bound senior struck out 14 of the first 18 batters he faced, finished with 15 strikeouts in 21 batters faced and did not issue a walk. The lone Warriors to reach base did so with Patten's leadoff single and two Colts Neck errors.

Gubitosi struck out a career-high 18 in a 3-1 win over St. John Vianney on Friday.

Sophomore right-hander Cullen Condon bested Gubitosi for the first six innings, striking out the side in order during the sixth to reach 12 punchouts for the game send the game to the seventh with Manasquan leading, 1-0.

Cullen pitched out of trouble in the top of the first by striking out Salamone and Cohen back-to-back after sophomore and winning pitcher Tom Diffley tripled into the rightfield corner with one out.
