Hard to believe but we are heading into the final weekend of October, one that will include trick or treating in some towns, the beginning of the state football playoffs and a run in downtown Toms River for a great cause.

Sunday is NOT Halloween but it is the day to trick or treat in Toms River and several surrounding towns.  The reason is the annual Halloween Parade sponsored by Toms River Fire Company #1 on Robbins Street.  Through an age-old agreement the parade is always held on Halloween and trick or treating is the day before.  It’s rather confusing for those who have just moved into the area and it does allow kids from some towns to double-dip but in this case the parade takes precedent.  As of now the weather looks great for those going door-to-door searching for candy but maybe not as nice for the parade with rain in the forecast.

21 Shore Conference public schools begin play this weekend in the revised NJSIAA Football Playoffs which for the first time will end with overall state champions in Groups 1-5 as well as two non-public champs.  Among the shore teams who would seem to have the best chance of winning three games and a sectional championship are Toms River North, Point Boro and Middletown South. Those teams are all top-seeds in their sectionals which means they will be at home with a chance to win three games and a state sectional title.

The Toms River Education Foundation has done some really good things to fill in the financial gap not covered by budgets in the Toms River School District.  Tomorrow they will hold a Halloween Themed 5K/1 Mile Fun Run and Kiddie Dash on Washington Street.  You can register on race day up until 2pm with the race to start at 2:45. Sponsors of the race include Carl’s Fencing, Decking & Home Improvements, The Citta Foundation, Crossroads Realty/The Kotzas Family Foundation, Kingstone Printing, Kiwanis Club of Greater Toms River, The Office Restaurant & Lounge, The VanDyke Family and Starkey, Kelly, Kennelly, Cunningham & Turnbach.

Saturday is also the last night for Downtown Night Out which has been a huge success and it looks like the weather will cooperate.  If you have made it to one this year this will be your final chance.  The outdoor event runs from 5-10pm.
