When Was The Latest It’s Ever Snowed In New Jersey?

We are seeing signs of spring everywhere at the Jersey Shore, but in the back of our heads, we know there is still that small chance of winter weather.

So, is that nagging concern warranted? The answer is probably yes because there are plenty of examples of snow in March and April. Did you know, though, that the Garden State has actually seen May snow?

Now we all know that from a weather standpoint, Sussex, Morris, Essex and Passaic Counties can seem worlds apart from the Jersey Shore, but it is worth mentioning that the latest accumulating snowfall ever in New Jersey happened in those counties on May (yeah May) 10th in 1954, according to nj.com.

That snow did not affect the Jersey Shore, but you'd you think we can't get late snow here, all you need to do is focus on April of 1982, when back to back accumulating snow events hit the Garden State.

The first was April 6,1982 when 1 to 4 inches fell, with as much as 10 inches in some northern counties, and then April 9th when 2 inches fell as far south as Atlantic City.

Granted, most of the late snowfalls in the Garden State were North Jersey events, but some of them make their way far enough south to have affected areas of the state we'd consider too close for comfort.

So, can we start thinking spring...yes. And can we forget about snow...no, not yet (especially for the pessimists and superstitious among us. We'll let you know when it's all clear.
