Popular New York Bridge Shifts in the Dangerous High Winds

So, are you someone in New Jersey who who must commute into an office for work?

Are you someone who is commuting into New York City? Or do you head into the city on a regular basis?

Well then holy cow, please check out this clip I was sent on Instagram.

Do you remember a few weeks ago when we had wind advisories in effect for our area and winds were up to 40 or 50 miles per hour? (Forget? I almost blew away...)

That is when this clip, which is from Unilad, of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was taken.

The wind is so strong that the bridge actually shifts back and forth and even makes sounds similar to those I've heard in a horror movie.

Before your heart starts pulsating out of your chest, just know that this isn't as worrisome as you would think.

Unilad also posted this clip on their Instagram account and one of the comments will calm those nerves right on down:

According to this Instagram user, this clip is not only nothing to be concerned about but is 100% normal.

I did some digging to see and it turns out, she is right!

According to MotorBiscuit.com, "Most suspension bridges have a truss system built into them beneath the road to keep it more rigid and less apt to sway and twist. But suspension bridges have to be somewhat flexible during high winds. Otherwise, they may break."

If I am reading this right, the bridge needs to be allowed to shift from natural elements so this set up is for our own safety. (Right?)

The article continues by saying, "The combined effects of too much weight and wind can lead to breaking support cables. Engineers supposedly take all of this into account when designing the bridge."

That explains why a lot of bridges have weight limits.

So you are safe and sound when it comes to travelling over the Verrazzano but before seeing this clip, I had no idea bridges could move like this.

It blew my mind so I thought it might have blown yours as well.

I am happy to have distracted you from your responsibilities for the last few minutes. It is my job after all!
