I’m going to talk about two things happening this weekend which in stealing a line from the old Patty Duke Show, “are as different as night and day.”  For those too young to remember the show then please just go along.

Saturday is the 38th Annual Ocean County St. Patrick’s Day Parade on the boulevard in Seaside Heights.  For many years this was simply one of my favorite days and along with a group of friends we spent most of it at Klee’s Bar & Grill which has also been one of my favorites for more than four decades.

Even after I ceased spending full days toasting the “patron saint of Ireland” I did continue a tradition of meeting my father at Klee’s in the morning for a shot of Irish whiskey.  It’s something I never acquired a taste for but with him gone I sure do miss it.

The parade starts at noon on J Street in Seaside Park and heads north to Hiering Avenue which is the last block in Seaside Heights. Anywhere on the boulevard in between gives you a good vantage point.  I’ve missed the parade for several years because of conflicts with basketball but tomorrow I’ll be back to watch it along with my family and our newest Irishman, 9 month old Carter.  Can’t wait!

Sunday there’s an event of a very different nature.  Most of you are no doubt familiar with the tragic fire last month in the Silverton section of Toms River that claimed the life of a 33-year old mother of three young children.

Sara Goodwin Trahey was a media specialist at Ella G. Clarke Elementary School in Lakewood where last week the library was dedicated in her memory.  The community has rallied around her husband Jeff and their children and that includes Sunday’s effort at Extraordinary Fitness in Silverton where Sara was a member.  They are hosting an all-day fundraiser at their facility on Hinds Road beginning at 7 a.m.

All classes for the day will be open to the public with a minimum $20 cash donation.  For more information you can check out their Facebook page.  Of course those in the area on Sunday can stop in and simply make a donation and show their support for the Trahey family and honor Sara’s life.
