A Toms River man has been charged with Vehicular Homicide and Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident among other offenses after he struck a pedestrian near mile-marker 86 on the Garden State Parkway last Saturday.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer announced Wednesday that Roberto Sandoval-Guerrero, 37, of Toms River, was also charged with Causing Death or Injury While Driving with a Suspended Driver’s License, Assault by Auto and Resisting Arrest.

New Jersey State Police received a call that day about a pedestrian who was struck by a motor vehicle in the area of Garden State Parkway South which then fled the scene.

An investigation determined that the victim, Daniel Cintron, was out of his own vehicle because he had been involved in a minor motor vehicle accident with another driver, Frank Puglisi, and the two men were exchanging insurance information on the shoulder of the parkway.

That's when they were struck by a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer operated by Sandoval-Guerrero.

Puglisi was struck on his left arm, while Cintron was thrown into the lanes of travel where he was run over by passing traffic.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sandoval-Guerrero continued drove off and abandoned his vehicle on the shoulder of the GSP before fleeing on foot.

He was eventually found along Route 9 and Church Road and was taken into custody.

Sandoval-Guerrero is currently lodged in the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
