Yet again, I am going to get slightly controversial. Before you say it, I understand that what I am about to say is easier said than done, however, as the disclaimer above states — this is my opinion which I have been thinking of writing about for a few weeks now; it has remained in my drafts file because of the controversy that surrounds what I am about to say.

Ocean County has been my home for 24 years now. While there is so much that I love about the county, I am not too fond of many things and find complete eyesores not only to the county but also to the entire Jersey Shore.

One of the biggest eyesores in Ocean County is, and has always been, the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant.

Let me be clear — this is not an attack on the hardworking New Jerseyans that work at Oyster Creek. I have two friends working on the cleanup project(s) at the generating facility, and they agree with me.

There is just something about nuclear power and materials, even though they are extraordinarily regulated and safe, that always freaked me out. Look, I am not dense: I understand the positive economic impact that the Oyster Creek generating facility had during its prime, but that time has come and gone. We now have safer and more attractive forms of energy.

When you drive past the facility, you see vast land that is for sale and property that is likely not being purchased because of the giant cooling tower and eerie box-shaped building.

Quite frankly — it is not pleasant… and creepy.

Don't get me wrong. There are many successful businesses in that area, many of which I am a patron of when I am down that way — but with the few owners that I have talked to, they have agreed with me wholeheartedly.

One business owner even told me that he believes that he would have even more business if the Oyster Creek generating facility weren't there.

So, with all of this being said — do you agree with me? Is the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Plant the biggest eyesore in Ocean County? Let us know in the comment section below.
