A Lakewood woman who tried crossing Shorrock Street succumbs to serious injuries Tuesday night around 5 pm.

Police say 53-year old Irene Perosi was crossing the middle of the road when she was hit by a 2010 Mazda CX-9 driven by a 56-year old Toms River man.

The driver told police he was heading southbound on Shorrock Street when his Mazda hit Perosi, "who was crossing the roadway mid-block."

It's unclear why the crosswalk between Route 70 and Shorrock Street wasn't used by the pedestrian.

Life saving measures were performed but were unable to save Perosi.

No charges have currently been filed against the Toms River driver.

The investigation is ongoing and witnesses are asked to call Lakewood Police Officer Alex Guzman at 732-363-0200.

Shorrock was closed in both directions Tuesday night for about three hours by the Lakewood Police Department Traffic Safety Unit, the Ocean County Prosecutors Office and Brick Township Police Department.
