This week is a little bit of everything that Simply Brilliant has become over the past six months.
We’re approaching 30 shows and six months on Beach Radio, so I take a look back at some of the incredible guests and conversations we’ve had, why I started the show, and I ask the question Ed Koch made famous: “How am I doing?”
I sat down with my friend Tim Poss — Pemberton Borough Police Lieutenant, Manchester Township Board of Education member, small business owner, coach, husband, father and community volunteer. We talk about growing up in Manchester, law enforcement, education, business, family and what service to your community really means.
This week is personal. I remember my high school friend Cindy, who recently passed away, and reflect on how quickly life moves, the friendships and families that shape us, and why we shouldn't wait until tomorrow to call someone, say “I love you,” or simply tell someone they matter. Life is short—make the time count.

This Week on Simply Brilliant, I welcome Toms River natives Kelly and Adam Servodio! We talk about growing up in Toms River, how they met, their careers with Community Medical Center Foundation and Wells Fargo, and their commitment to giving back to the community. Then we have some fun talking about their newest challenge — competing together in Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey’s Dancing with Their Stars on September 30 at Eagle Oaks!
I’ll also recap the latest Toms River Council meeting, affordable housing, and my court victory keeping the entire Council meeting — including public comment — livestreamed. And my Simply Brilliant Moment is a very personal reflection on Yom Kippur, our Holocaust survivors, and the remarkable story of 101-year-old Gela Buchbinder.

This week on Simply Brilliant, we start with one of the biggest issues facing Toms River — affordable housing. The obligation is real, but where should the housing go? I talk about the Township’s current plan, the loss of Hope’s Crossing, the proposed Route 9 location, and why alternatives involving private property and the approved Meridia project deserve a serious and transparent evaluation before we commit publicly owned land.
My guest is Jennifer Shufran, Vice President of the Community Medical Center Foundation, who joins me to talk about her career in philanthropy, the Foundation’s impact at Community Medical Center, and two major events coming up this week — the Patrick and Frances Ahearn Family Courtyard dedication and Local Summer Celebration.
And for my Simply Brilliant Moment, I get personal and share some of my childhood memories and traditions of Yom Kippur — fasting, walking to synagogue, leading the final service, the sound of the shofar and, yes, finally getting to break-fast!

Tim shares his decision to enlist in the Marines, his experiences serving our country, returning home, and the lessons of service, courage and leadership that continue to guide him today.
Plus, Phil reflects on government transparency, going back to school at 59, Rosh Hashanah, and shares a powerful Simply Brilliant Moment featuring 9/11 survivor Ari Schonbrun and the extraordinary choices that helped save his life.

As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11th, I’m joined by Kathy Cunningham, who lost her brother, Donald “Donnie” Robertson Jr., at the World Trade Center. Kathy shares who Donnie was beyond 9/11, how her family endured that unimaginable day, and how she turned grief into purpose through Team Shamrock and her work as a Board Member of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
We also talk about what “Never Forget” means 25 years later and the upcoming Tunnel to Towers Jersey Shore 5K Run & Walk on October 18th in Wall Township.
And in my Simply Brilliant Moment, I remember the extraordinary courage of the passengers and crew of Flight 93 and the two words that still resonate 25 years later: “Let’s Roll.”

This week, I sit down with Steve Heisman, President and CEO of HABcore, for an important conversation about homelessness in Ocean County, the services HABcore provides, and its plans for the recently purchased Pelican Inn & Suites on Route 37 in Toms River. We talk about the $7 million acquisition, public funding, safety, approvals, supportive housing, and the bigger question: How do we balance compassion, accountability and the responsibility we all share to help those without a safe place to call home?
I also begin a special three-week Simply Brilliant Moment marking the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, sharing my personal memories of that day, the loss of my high school friend Sheryl Rosner Rosenbaum, and remembering the extraordinary courage, humanity and unity America showed afterward.
