Masking Up and Winning Games

Random notes and thoughts:

The surge in positive COVID-19 cases across the country continues while at the same time millions of Americans simply refuse to wear a mask believing that government has no right to force them to do so.

What’s especially frustrating to health officials is that for the most part there is no way to get someone to wear a mask unless they put one on as law enforcement simply can’t write a summons for all the violators.  In addition some states only recommend residents wear a protective face covering.  Some officials are predicting a surge in cases in the next couple of months that would be largely centered in the middle of the country.

Now for something more uplifting.  The Giants made first-year head coach Joe Judge a winner for the first time thanks to a one-point victory over the equally awful Washington Football Team on Sunday.  The victory came after Washington scored in the final minute but rather then kick the extra point and head to overtime decided to go for the win but a two-point conversion failed.

Meanwhile the Jets are the only team left in the NFL without a victory and are 0-6 for the first time in 24 years after being shut out by Miami on Sunday.

Donovan Catholic and Southern both collected impressive football victories over the weekend and are on a collision course for what could be an epic showdown later this month.  The Griffins, who trounced Toms River South, visit Brick this Friday and the Rams, coming off a destruction of Toms River North will host the South Indians on Saturday.

If they win they’ll take 4-0 records into an October 30^th game in Toms River.

Vin Scully is considered by many as the greatest play-by-play voice in the history of sports and you could certainly make a case for voice of the Dodgers and baseball for nearly seven decades.

I also think you could make an argument for Mike “Doc” Emrick who makes listening to hockey a pure joy even for those who don’t necessarily love or even understand the sport.  His voice, his anecdotes, his passion all add up to a maestro behind the mike.  Today Emrick and NBC will officially announce his retirement at the age of 74 and it’s a huge loss for the NHL.
