The strong thunderstorms that roared through the Jersey Shore was the cause of a fire in Holmdel on Wednesday night.

Lightning struck a tree outside of a home on Galloping Hill Road around 6:30 pm which traveled to the base and into an electrical outlet until it reached the residence causing it to catch fire.

The resident reported a heavy smoke condition in the residence after a lightning strike.

The Holmdel Fire Department located a fire behind the wall in the basement of the residence which was then contained to the wall in the basement and extinguished.

All emergency units cleared from the scene by 8:00 PM.

Holmdel Police Department, Holmdel Fire Company #2, Holmdel First Aid Squad, Holmdel Office of Emergency Management and the Monmouth County Fire Marshal's Office all responded to investigate and put out the fire.
