Last Trip To CitiField (maybe)
I have never felt that as a fan of a sports team I am obligated to attend their games in person to prove that I’m a real fan. With that said this past Sunday I went to CitiField to watch my beloved New York Mets play for the last time, barring circumstances I will explain later.
This has nothing to do with my rooting for the Mets as even though this is clearly a low-point for the franchise they are still MY team. That goes back as far as I can remember when I was a kid growing up in Rockaway Beach, New York. As a 9-year old I got my first Mets autograph from outfielder Johnny Lewis while attending summer camp. Both Lewis and the autograph were gone before long.
I remember my father taking me to my first Mets game at Shea Stadium around that time and being amazed at the size of the place and how green the grass was. I have always rooted for Mets even though they have produced more heartbreak than joy and I will continue to do so.
However whether it was Shea Stadium or now the wonderful CitiField getting there from here is just too much of a hassle. I have always preferred to watch my team play in Philadelphia where the commute is much easier.
However my wife Jane has been asking for a couple of years to see a Mets home game so this past Sunday was it courtesy of David Crossan, who provided great tickets which allowed for a nice family outing with Brandon and Alex joining us.
I refuse to drive to Flushing, especially on a summer Sunday so the trip took us to Hoboken (where both my children live) where we took the PATH into Penn Station and then the LIRR to CitiField. All good and comfortably in our seats only to see the visiting Colorado Rockies score 7 runs in the first two innings. Ballgame basically over.
I was disgusted and disheartened and ready to leave right then but we managed to stay into the 7th before it was the LIRR back to Penn Station, the PATH back to Hoboken, a quick dinner and then the drive home. By the way did I mention that the Mets have lost 4 of the last 5 home games I have attended, including game #3 of the 2015 World Series?
So that’s it for me at CitiField with the following three exceptions:
- Limo to and from
- Luxury suite with unlimited food and drink
- Todd Frazier ends up with the Mets
I guess my next Mets game will be sometime next year in Philadelphia.
