The James Volpe Foundation, a Jackson based non-profit, is hosting their 7th annual Gold Classic in honor of the former Jackson Memorial baseball player and to help others at the shore.

It takes place May 7 at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Lakewood and includes golf and a luncheon.

Foundation Vice-President John Mucia says this fundraiser is a way of helping others the way James did.

"We want to emulate James' character through having a good time and in the process we're working to help younger people in the community be able to reach their highest potential in education and sports," Mucia said.

The money raised goes to scholarships for high school students and provides funds for the foundation to donate to philanthropic causes.

So dust off your putters and nine-irons and head to the fundraiser and compete in a number of games.

"We usually have the pin competition set up on the par-three's and whoever's golfing gets one ticket," Mucia said. "Their first shot will be their live shot to the pin and for an additional fee they can purchase a second ticket to have another chance at winning. Whoever is the closest to the pin at the end of the outing will be the winner."

They will also have a putting contest on the 18th green.

"They'll be different set-ups of different golf balls in different areas depending on where they put the pin position and people will have a chance to put and win a prize," Mucia said.

The classic also includes other ways to win some prizes from a gift auction and other drawings.

"We'll have a couple quality premium baskets that we'll be auctioning off," Mucia said. "We'll have some 50/50 raffles, a couple contests that we always do...closest to the pin competition and a putting competition."

The fundraiser is for both the golfer and anyone who would like to support their cause.

He says these type of events help them raise money towards their end goal of, "being able to help younger people in the community reach their highest potential in education and sports."

They're having an early bird registration special up until April 7, so sign-up and register today.

Event registration begins at 7:30 am on May 7 and everything will wrap up by around 3:00 pm.

The foundation honors the memory of the late James Volpe, a Jackson Memorial High School senior who was killed in a 2011 car crash in Manchester Township at the age of 17.
