Police found a woman at her home on Maria Street Saturday afternoon with a large slash on her face and full of blood.

A man, later identified as 38-year old Michael Mahan of Ewing, followed the woman home and started a confrontation with her over the road rage incident he alleges took place.

The victim told police that Mahan punched her, threatened to kill her and held a knife to her throat as he slashed her face.

A neighbor came in to break it up and called 9-1-1 which is when Mahan took off.

As police were responding to the scene, a Sergeant spotted Mahan's vehicle on Toms River Road and began a pursuit which briefly paused and picked up again after the Sergeant got out of his vehicle and Mahan drove off again.

Mahan struck a vehicle on West Veterans Highway as he swerved across the road and once he straightened out, drove even faster, which is when the Sergeant ended the pursuit for safety reasons.

While the pursuit temporarily ended, police still followed Mahan from a distance where they saw him hit another vehicle in the rear on West Veterans Highway forcing it off the road into the woods across from the Switlik School.

His runaway in the car ended 500 feet later, when the vehicle became disabled and he was then arrested.

Mahan's vehicle was later impounded but before it was, police found the knife he used in the attack.

The stabbing victim was treated at the hospital and the occupants of the two vehicles Mahan struck were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Following his arrest, he was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, terroristic threats, eluding, aggravated assault (causing bodily injury during a pursuit: 6 counts), driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to breath testing and multiple other motor vehicle offenses.

He was processed and transported to the Ocean County Jail.

Jackson Police said that they've learned since this incident that Mahan allegedly threatened someone else on Lakehurst Avenue after the victim in that case parked in front of his house.

That incident remains under investigation.
