A South Jersey man is in serious condition after a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta sent him off of his 2018 Tao motorized scooter in Whiting on Tuesday afternoon.

Manchester Township Police say 74-year old Carol A. Gibson was pulling out of the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church on Schoolhouse Road around 2:58 pm and failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided with 37-year old Egg Harbor City resident, Sean M. Malmstrom, who was on the scooter.

The force of the impact caused the scooter to become lodged under Gibson's vehicle.

Malmstrom was found lying on his back in the northbound lane with obvious signs of injury to his right leg.

Police say he was wearing a DOT approved helmet, but no other gear at the time of the crash.

Malmstrom was transported by medivac helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical University Center for treatment and evaluation of serious life-threatening injuries and is currently listed in serious condition.

Police say the investigation into the crash is still ongoing, but driver error on the part of Gibson appears to be a contributing factor.

This crash is being investigation by Patrolman Jesse Hoydis of the Manchester Township Police Traffic Safety Unit.
