Caught: Marlton man who assaulted 87-year old Berkeley woman

The Marlton man wanted for allegedly striking an 87-year old woman with a golf club at Miller Air Park last month and then robbing her has been arrested, announced Berkeley Township Police Chief Karin DiMichele.

David Steen, 51, was pulled over on Monday morning around 9:40 am on Route 70 near mile marker 19.5 for a motor vehicle violation unrelated to the warrant out for his arrest.

He has been remanded to the Ocean County Jail.

Berkeley Police responded to a robbery report on the morning of September 23 where Steen allegedly stole personal items from the elderly woman.

The victim was able to get to her car and leave the fairgrounds and sought medical attention.

She sustained moderate head injuries consistent with the described attack.

The victim was able to provide police with a detailed description of her assailant, his vehicle and also was able to complete (with a State Police sketch artist) a composite of her attacker.

Detectives felt that the randomness of this violent attack and the remote location where it occurred created unique obstacles in which to solve this case and identify and arrest the perpetrator.

They followed up on hundreds of leads, which included suspect interviews, data research, witness interviews, area canvasses, surveillance operations, and tip line calls.

The evidence gathered in this case lead to the identification of a male who fit the description and who use to frequent Miller Airpark where he would bring his small dog.

Detectives were able to at first identify a name of the subject’s dog as well a detailed vehicle description.

These clues were used to assist in identifying Steen as the suspect.

Steen is facing charges for Robbery in the First Degree, Aggravated Assault in the 3rd Degree, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in the 3rd degree and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon of the 4th degree.
