An Open Letter to People Who Don’t Use the Left Lane for Passing Only

Driving in New Jersey can be tough as it is, and some people like to make it worse by hogging the left lane.

Dear Left Lane Hoggers -

I get it, we're all just trying to get to where we need to go at the end of the day. But not only are you making it more difficult for all of us, but your ignorance of the Left Lane Law is also pretty dangerous too. Maybe I should give you the benefit of the doubt for a second. Maybe you're unaware of the Left Lane Law. The below excerpt from NJticketattorneys.com explains it much better than I can:

In New Jersey, it is against the law to stay in the left lane unless you are passing another vehicle when the road is divided into clearly marked lanes for traffic. This represents a failure to observe traffic lanes. According to N.J.S.A. 39:4-88a, “a vehicle shall normally be driven in the lane nearest the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway when that lane is available for travel, except when overtaking another vehicle or in preparation for a left turn.”

Think about this the next time you ride the left lane - you're slowing people down who need to pass (what if there is an emergency situation they need to get to), and you're causing everyone else who does need to pass to disobey the law by making them pass unsafely in the middle or right lanes. And of course, if you're driving recklessly in the left lane, this goes for you too.

I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to scream on the Parkway because someone was driving in the incorrect lane. Don't be that person. Don't slow everyone down. Don't put everyone in danger.

On behalf of all the frustrated drivers reading this, Left Lane Hoggers, please do better. It's all one road and we're just sharing it.
