A distress call from the 40-foot recreational boat was received by the Coast Guard's Sandy Hook Station in Middletown around 5 p.m., the Coast Guard said.

By the time the Coast Guard's lifeboat and a crew from the FDNY responded, the unidentified civilian had safely transferred all 8 people off the vessel.

All 8 were then brought to shore by FDNY crews and treated for minor medical concerns, according to the Coast Guard.

The fire was fully extinguished, but the boat was unrecoverable and sank in 85-feet of water about six miles off the coast. There was no report of pollution in the water at the time, the Coast Guard said.
