There is another monkeypox update and it is very telling of how bad the situation is becoming.  I told you all about the vaccine shortage and why it happened already but what is being done about the shortage gives me very little confidence that the vaccine will be effective at all.

In an effort to stretch the minimal supply of the Jynneos monkeypox vaccine, federal health officials have just authorized a totally different way of administering it to people.

The new plan is for health care providers will give much smaller doses to people using a different method of injection.

The new injection strategy is to give “shallow” injections.  This means the shot will go intradermally, which is a fancy way of saying it goes between layers of the skin.  This is different from the standard shot, which would be delivered subcutaneously and given into the fatty layer below the skin.  The amount of vaccine would be reduced to 1/5th of the amount of the standard shot.  This is a lot like adding water to the last few inches of milk in the container to ensure all the kids can eat their cereal.

This virus is no joke.  There are now more than 10,000 cases in the United States most of which are in the tri-state area.  That number is growing fast and experts are saying that we are getting downplayed information to keep us calm post COVID. Haven’t we learned anything from going through this pandemic?  We should be pros by now of dealing with rando viruses but someone dropped the ball and let Europe take all the stored vaccines.  If this “mini vax” is actually effective, why wouldn’t we always do it this way?  Lord knows people are always looking for ways to save money.  The short answer is, that this method is not just as good and we're scrambling.

This is a painful sickness that puts you out of commission for at least 5 weeks.  No, monkeypox does not usually take lives but it makes life pretty miserable.  We have more than 10,000 monkeypox cases in the United States and Jynneos has been in short supply for weeks. I’ll keep you posted as I learn more.
