Woman phone scammed out of $450 Google Play cards in Forked River
FORKED RIVER – Officers from the Lacey Township Police Department responded to a report of computer fraud at the 200 block of Chestnut Lane in Forked River on Monday.
The victim told officers that she had received a phone call from a person a person claiming to be a Comcast employee, which she believed.
The caller told her that her computer IP address had been compromised and that their tech service department would correct the problems and check for suspicious activity.
A short time later, the subject called her back and told her that he had found several attempts to access her accounts.
She was asked to purchase $450 in Google Play cards and provide the card information to him. She complied.
He then told her that he would continue to work out the problems and give her a call back the next day, which he did – and requested more money for additional problems found.
This made the victim suspicious and she froze her financial accounts.
The New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs says that “legitimate companies do no cold-call consumers with regard to malfunctioning computers, viruses, or any other matter…if you get a call like this, hang up immediately.”
