I woke up this morning with one thought on my mind: Where do we go from here?

At some point the demonstrations and protests are going to have to end.  We simply can’t have cities and towns across the nation continue to deal with what have seen over the past week…can we?

Businesses that were open or at least hoping to open and have now been looted, damaged and destroyed will clean up…maybe.  Those that are closed because of fear of what will happen will need to open up soon…won’t they?  I know there are bigger issues but who is going to pay for all the costs associated with everything that has taken place?

The death of George Floyd came at a time when America was on edge and it pushed things over the top.  People have been locked up in their homes, are out of work and school, frustrated beyond imagination, have watched family and friends die from a virus that was unimaginable a year ago.

They need food, money and just as importantly, hope, and in some cases are striking out.  The murder of a black man at the hands of a white police officer for all of us to see was the tipping point.

So again I ask the question: where do we go from here?  A cop has been charged with murder and hopefully three others will follow very soon.  That is not going to be enough to silence a movement and likely put an end to the gatherings, marches and protests and part of that is many people have nothing else to do.  Let’s be honest the timing for this is either great or bad depending on your point of view.

Many of the peaceful protestors I saw yesterday in Toms River would have normally been at work or in school but that is not the case.  I did talk briefly with one high school senior, a white female who when I asked why she was part of this responded. “it’s a lot more interesting than virtual learning.”

America is at a crossroads. What we need now is a road map.
