I did not watch Tuesday night’s State of the Union address by President Trump for a very simple reason: I fell asleep before it started.

The headlines seem to be going to not what the President said but the interaction or lack thereof with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who of course launched the soon-to-be-ending impeachment proceedings.  As is customary President Trump handed her a copy of the speech as he took the podium and she extended her hand in return but was snubbed by him although it’s not clear if it was intentional.

However what was intentional was her reaction at the conclusion when she ripped up her copy of the speech which as you might expect resulted in disdain from one side and praise from the other.  Such is the political landscape we live in today.

So what is the state of our union?  I don’t know if there is an answer, well certainly not an easy one.

I think we can all agree that never in our history (at least in the last century) have we been as divided as we are when it comes to political ideology.  Our president who has legions of passionate supporters who would run through a wall for him. Just look at that rally he held in Wildwood last week. They were not just supporters but die-hard fans who truly believe in Trump and his agenda.

Of course just as many and maybe a lot more consider him a villain who spews hate and is the #1 reason why our country is so divided.  They’ll run through a wall to make sure he does not win a second term and hope that someone from the Democratic side wins this November and starts to heal a fractured nation.

And then there are those in the middle who at one time probably made up the majority.  They believe in some of what Trump says and does but also believe strongly that there is a much better way to go about it and it could start with being respectful to those on the opposing side.  It would not hurt to cut down on the tweets either.

What is the state of our union?  Damned if I know.
