Ronald Moore, 69, of Union, waded into rough surf to retrieve equipment, and was overcome by waves, investigators said, based on a witness's account.

Moore was found unresponsive in waist-deep water after police were summoned to Gunnison Beach at 8:07 AM.

Officers and federal park rangers began resuscitation procedures until Moore was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center in West Long Branch, where revival attempts failed, police said.

Middletown police encourage anyone knowing additional details about the incident to call them at 732-615-2120.
