Wall High School Will Not Rehire Tony Grandinetti as Head Football Coach
Wall Township High School has opened its search for a head football coach, posting the application for the job on Friday.
District officials had not formally addressed the status of now-former head coach Tony Grandinetti for the 2022 season. Grandinetti, along with Athletic Director Tom Ridoux and assistant coaches Joe LaFerlita and Mike Cerminaro, had been suspended by the district as a result of the hazing allegations and ongoing investigation into the football program by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Those three coaches were the only district employees among Wall football's coaching staff.
The job posting read:
"Wall High School is a highly rated public high school with approximately 1000 students. Located in southern Monmouth County, the school is easily accessible by the Garden State Parkway, I-195/138, Route 18, and Route 35. Wall High School seeks an experienced Head Varsity Football Coach to build upon a history of success."
District officials could not be reached for comment.
Grandinetti was hired as Wall's head coach prior to the 2017 season after previously serving as the team's offensive line coach. He went 36-14 in five seasons, including leading Wall to a 12-1 season and the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 3 championship in 2019. In 2020, Wall went 7-0, won the unofficial Shore Conference title, and finished the season ranked No. 1 in the state by NJ.com. He is also employed as a business teacher at Wall High School.
But this season, a hazing scandal enveloped the football program, school, and community. Allegations of hazing and potential criminal activity prompted an investigation and forced the cancelation of the remainder of the team's season following a first-round playoff victory. That also included the cancelation of the annual Thanksgiving gave vs. Manasquan.
Charges have since been filed against an unspecified number of students.
There are still several unknowns involving the case since juveniles are involved. Regarding the coaches, there has been much speculation regarding their status and the assumption that they would not return for the 2022 season, but the Wall Township Board of Education, citing the policy of not discussing personnel decisions, has not commented on those matters. There has also been no update on their employment status as teachers in the district.
