Valet employees admit illegally selling spots in New Brunswick parking deck
NEW BRUNSWICK — After admitting to stealing more than $500 in parking fees from the New Brunswick Parking Authority, four employees will get probation and repay more than the amount they took from the city.
Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey said Karran Buchhan, 19, of Franklin Township, Joshue Castillo-Mendoza, 25, of South Brunswick, and Ferrad West, 23, of East Brunswick, all pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree conspiracy to commit theft. A fourth defendant, 19-year-old Atis Mir-Merced, pleaded guilty to conspiracy, but will be allowed to enter pre-trial intervention program, which allows charges to eventually be dropped.
According to Carey, an investigation showed that between January 1 and March 4 of 2016 the four took cash payments from customers to park their cars illegally. Det. Harry Lemmerling said the four worked as parking valets at at restaurants on Dennis Street and sold spots to motorists at the Wolfson parking deck.
As part of the plea deal the four will pay the parking authority $200 in restitution and will be permanently barred from public employment.
