The Victory Garden, built by American Legion Post 129, officially opened today at their location at 2025 Church Road in Toms River.

Victory gardens - formerly known as war gardens - date back to World War I and II after food production had fallen and residents were urged to plant fruits, vegetables, and herbs on private and public lands.

Fulfill’s Master Gardener, Jess Sinkhorn, designed the Toms River Victory Garden and assisted other gardeners with the layout and plantings. The food will go to veterans and families in need who are serviced by Fulfill, formerly the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

The Victory Garden was designed to positively impact our veteran community by improving health and reducing the risk of chronic disease in our aging veterans. In addition to feeding the hungry, the garden will provide horticultural therapy for veterans with PTSD.

Beds of fruits & vegetables are named after famous U.S. battles and are built at varying heights for those with bad backs or are wheelchair-bound.
