Much of my responsibility these days centers on our Shore Sports Network and our coverage of high school sports in Ocean and Monmouth County.

One of our weekly features during the football season is honoring a team as our Jersey Mike’s Team of the Week. We have done this for the past several years as part of our partnership with Jersey Mike’s Subs as our staff salutes one team for a significant victory or achievement.

Tuesday night I got to present the most recent weekly honor to Toms River East and it was gratifying when you consider how far the Raiders have come this fall.  From 2011 through 2018 East had gone a dismal 15-63 and entering his fourth season as head coach Kyle Sandberg had won just five games.

However a season-opening 2-point win over Howell has set the tone for a year in which the 6-0 Raiders have won five of those games by five points or less.  Last week’s 14-13 nail bitter over Neptune clinched at least a tie for the Freedom Division title and TR East can wrap up that championship with a victory over winless Lakewood at home on Friday night.

It was the victory over the Scarlet Fliers that earned the weekly honor for the program as I presented them with a game ball last night at practice and best of all $500 in Jersey Mike’s gift cards.  That’s a sub above for a team above.

Bouncing around a bit:

Are the Yankees in trouble?  Well in order to advance to the World Series they would have to win three of the next four against the Astros and they will face Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole in two of those games.  A tall order but I wouldn’t hit the panic button just yet.

This is not the most natural segue but it’s important enough that I want to mention this.  Community Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus are hosting a free colon cancer seminar tomorrow (Thursday) from 1-3pm at the Ramada by Wyndham on Route 9 in Toms River.

You’ll learn if you’re at risk as well as colorectal screening, early diagnosis and treatment.  Lunch will also be provided but you must register in advance by calling 1-888-724-7123.
