It’s been over twenty years since we had to go down the “baby” aisle at the supermarket and here we go again. No April and I are not having a late-in-life baby, the answer is we are taking care of a senior dog.

If you have had or currently have a senior pet then you know what I’m talking about. It is a tough time for our pets and for their caregivers. We want our Dexter to be comfortable, but we also want to make it easier for us, juggling work, life, and taking care of his needs.

The first thing that we have found to be a big help is diapers, yup "doggie" diapers. Dexter is going on 17 and he is deaf and sight is failing so he often would find himself having issues and this helps both him and our home. Damage from accidents at home, as I'm sure you know, can get expensive. With the diapers, Dexter can relax and so can we. We still let him outside from time to time, we just take off his diaper and let him get some exercise, sunshine, and fresh air.

Another issue we have with our aging dog is that Dexter is losing his teeth so what used to be no problem to eat, has become a bit of a struggle. We have decided that along with his other "small dog" food, we are adding baby food to his diet It's soft and easy for him to eat and he gets his protein, he likes beef, turkey, ham, and chicken. Again we supplement his regular diet with the baby food so he gets a few sources each day.
