The Essex and Sussex is located on the water at 70 Ocean Ave in one of the most amazing spots you could imagine.
The building itself is as jaw-dropping as the perfect ocean view. The story of this incredible place starts way back in the late 1800s.
In 1882, Hastings Square, which is between First and Second Avenues in Spring Lake, has a bunch of cottages on it, according to the Essex and Sussex website. One of the cottages was named Essex and another was named Sussex.
A fire in 1900 destroyed several buildings including the Essex Cottage. Fourteen years after the fire the Hastings Square property was sold to the Hastings Suare Hotel Company.
One hundred eight years ago, in 1914 the Essex and Sussex Hotel was opened and could accommodate up to 400 guests, and the legend began.
For the next 70 years, the hotel thrived as a getaway for the rich and famous from all over the country and world.
The Essex and Sussex Hotel finally closed its doors permanently in 1985, ending an amazing era for this landmark building.
Of course, if you fast forward 35 years or so, you know that the building is home to some of the most sought-after places to live in the area, and boasts an incredible banquet hall for weddings and other occasions.
