Today is officially the final day of summer as the autumn equinox arrives Saturday night and within a few days we will notice that the nights are now longer than the days which frankly is a bit depressing.

What is not depressing is the third full weekend of the high school football season has arrived and tonight on 92.7 WOBM we will broadcast the first of three all-Toms River battles on the gridiron.

Both the East Raiders and South Indians are 0-2 heading into this one at what I believe is the best place to watch a game on Friday night: Detweiler Stadium in downtown Toms River.

Our Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week can also be watched on our live video stream on shoresportsnetwork.com.  This is the 39th straight year the two schools will meet on the field with East leading the series 20-18 although the original Toms River high school has won 6 in-a-row.

The fall is also a great time for runners with the heat and humidity of the summer months a thing of the past for the most part.  My friends at the Causeway Family of Dealerships in Manahawkin are sponsoring a 5K on Sunday, October 21 for the benefit of Fulfill (formerly The Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties).

Causeway is organizing the race to help raise money so Fulfill can continue to provide services to help end hunger in the shore area.  The Stafford Township Municipal Complex is race headquarters on October 21st and to register to run visit raceforum/causeway.  T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 250 registrants.

The fall is also a big time for golf outings and it’s not too late to sign up and play in the 4th Annual Toms River FMBA #483 Police & Fire Dispatchers Charity Golf Outing on Monday, October 1st at Eagle Ridge.  Proceeds go to a scholarship fund for Toms River high school students majoring in communication, fire science and emergency medicine as well as local charitable organizations.  For more information call (848) 223-7071.

Hope you enjoy the final day of summer and welcome to autumn.
