I didn’t need the calendar to tell me summer was over.  The end actually came weeks ago when everywhere you went you were exposed to those dreaded two words that signal fall is coming: PUMPKIN SPICE.

Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Wawa, 7-11, Cracker Barrel, McDonald’s, they all throw Pumpkin Spice in your face like it’s the greatest thing even invented.  Actually it wasn’t invented but you know what I mean.

Anyway fall is officially here and now comes the question of when to transition out of the summer wardrobe that I truly love.  I wore shorts nearly every day from June until this week and to be honest I would wear them all year long if I could.

I guess because I’m a rather dull person I try and make up for it by wearing light and bright colors and of course there used to be that rule that you can’t wear white after Labor Day.  I have done some research and learned that is no longer the case but there are some do’s and don’ts.

Bottom line is it’s more about the material than the color.  Linen, canvas, thin cottons, seersucker are best to be left for the summer months, unless of course you are going on vacation.

However I can still wear white, pink, yellow and other bright colors which is great because I really don’t like brown, orange and red which seem to be popular. I guess because they are the same color as leaves.

I’m told orange is especially big this year and I’m afraid it will be a reminder of two teams I root for, the Mets and Knicks.  The Mets were bad and the Knicks likely will be as well.

For me I put off the change as long as possible but the time is coming when I’ll have no choice but to make the switch.  One thing I will hang on to is my topsiders and other boat shoes for as long as possible. Without socks of course.
