So the Mets are above .500 for the first time since May 2nd after sweeping a doubleheader from the Marlins last night and only 2 ½ games back in the National League Wild Card standings.

I just can’t get too excited yet because while they have won 11 of their last 12 games they have done it against losing teams and starting this weekend the schedule gets much tougher. However I will admit it’s a lot more fun to watch the Mets now than a month or so ago.

It would be great to have meaningful games in September for New York’s other team because we know the Yankees are headed to the post-season and are among the favorites to win the World Series.  And yes Phillies fans I know you are ahead of the Mets!

The 50th season of the Jersey Shore Basketball League is winding down and while things are different from the days they played at Jerry Lynch’s and The Headliner the golden anniversary of summer basketball has been a good one at St. Rose High School in Belmar.  Fans still come a couple of nights a week to see former high school and college standouts and even those playing in pro leagues and it doesn’t cost them a dime.

Sponsored by Patriot Mortgage the playoff semifinals are set for tonight with Orthopaedic Institute to take on surprising Island Title in the 7 p.m. opener followed by regular season champion Sterns Trailer meeting Larson Ford.  Both games will be streamed live on shoresportsnetwork.com with yours truly and Greg Kapalko calling the action.

If you’re looking to play golf for a good cause then there’s still time to sign up for the 9th annual Joseph W. Cannova Scholarship Fund outing on Monday, August 19th at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.  Established in 2010 following the sudden passing of Joey, a Toms River East graduate and student at the University of Connecticut, the golf outing helps fund a pair of scholarships given to High School East seniors in his memory.

For information you can check out the Joseph W. Cannova Memorial Scholarship Facebook page or call 732-240-3915.
