Remembering Superstorm Sandy

"This is something that affected thousands of families in very individual ways," said Matthew Bender, a professor of history at The College of New Jersey.

On October 29, 2012, one of the worst disasters in New Jersey history played out, as Post-Tropical Cyclone Sandy caused incredible wind, rain, and storm surge.

Since Sandy made landfall in Atlantic County on Oct. 29, 2012, there have been plenty of reminders that New Jersey is not fully prepared to take on severe weather events.

The project isn't done yet as a new beacon light will be installed and the interior lantern steel platform repaired during the winter.

The most shared negative experience from the October 2012 storm was the loss of power, which lasted several days for many Garden Staters.

"People forget how close we are to the river. It was a gush headed our way. It was unimaginable," said Dr. Jyoti Matta at Jersey City Medical Center.

"Unfortunately, nobody knows the exact number of Sandy families who still aren’t home, likely due to the fact that no federal or state agency has been tracking these people," says grassroots organization New Jersey Organizing Project.

"It was basically in a league of its own, in terms of anything New Jersey has seen in recorded weather history."
