A rumored job action by NJ Transit engineers became a reality Friday morning when their union used the state Juneteenth holiday for a sick out over a new contract.
Service on NJ Transit's Morris & Essex Line and the Gladstone Branch is suspended after a catenary pole fell on top of wires near Maplewood late Monday night.
The Department of Transportation said that in 2019, prior to COVID, the 267 million trips provided by NJT represented 1 out of every 37 public transit rides in the country, covering 164 million miles.
The deal gives NJ Transit $2.66 billion out of $14 billion in aid to the New York region. To reach its goal, NJT now needs a $400 million supplemental grant.
