St. John Vianney Football Player Airlifted after Injury

The St. John Vianney football program is praying for senior Aaron Van Trease this morning after the senior standout suffered a significant neck injury early in Friday's game vs. Manasquan High School.

Van Trease, the Lancers' quarterback and safety, was playing defensive back when he suffered an apparent spinal cord injury on the third play of the game during an attempted tackle. According to St. John Vianney head coach Jeff Papcun, Van Trease had no feeling in his lower body when he was taken from the field by stretcher but had movement in his upper body.

Van Trease had surgery on Saturday morning at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick but his condition is unknown at this time, according to NJ.com.

St. John Vianney went on to defeat Manasquan, 32-0, and improve to 4-1. The Lancers entered the Week ranked No. 9 in the Jeep Store Shore Sports Network Top 10

Van Trease's injury and a significant injury to Marlboro quarterback AJ Schwartz clouded Friday night's Week 4 Shore Conference football schedule.

Schwartz was taken by ambulance to Jersey Shore University Medical Central in Neptune following a leg injury in Marlboro's 28-14 loss to Howell. Schwartz had played a major role in Marlboro's 3-0 start and its first-ever appearance in the Shore Sports Network Top 10. Marlboro was No. 7 entering this week and Schwartz had thrown for 200 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 201 yards and three touchdowns. He was a Third Team All-Shore selection last season.

Shore Sports Network will have an update on Van Trease's injury when that information becomes available.
