SHIRLEY ALSTON of Passaic’s SHIRELLES Is 77 Today
They hailed from Passaic, New Jersey - the same city as Joey Dee and the Starlighters of "Peppermint Twist" fame - and became the first girl group of the rock era to reach #1 on the charts. In fact, they did it twice with "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "Soldier Boy" along with several other Top Ten classics such as "Mama Said," "Baby It's You," "Foolish Little Girl" and "Dedicated to the One I Love." Their songs were written by some of the best in the business - Carole King and Gerry Goffin, and Burt Bacharach and Mack David. Lead singer SHIRLEY ALSTON REEVES is 77 today, and still going strong, and we in NJ are proud to say that they are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
