‘Serious crash’ closes Route 9 in Marlboro, NJ
MARLBORO — The investigation of a crash involving a pedestrian shut down a section of Route 9, causing large backups and disruptions to NJ Transit buses on Monday.
A 64-year-old man from the Cliffwood Beach section of Aberdeen was struck around 12:30 p.m. while in a northbound lane near Willow Lane by a 19-year-old Old Bridge man who stayed at the scene, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Mark Spivey.
The Cliffwood Beach man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, according to Spivey, who did not disclose the identity of either man. No charges have yet been filed.
Route 9 was closed in both directions between Union Hill Road and Newman Springs Road (Route 520) in Marlboro for several hours. Local roads like Tennant Road and Union Hill Road were slow with extra traffic.
The Route 9 corridor is a key route for NJ Transit buses heading into Monmouth and Ocean counties and two routes were detoured because of the closure, including bus routes 139/67.
