It seems like the fall high school sports season just started but in the case of some sports like soccer and field hockey the Shore Conference Tournament is about to begin which marks the beginning of the postseason when champions are determined around the shore and state.

As for football, we have reached week six of the nine week season that determines playoff teams and the Friday night schedule is highlighted by a trio of games in the Class “A South” Division.

Brick is the team everyone is chasing as the Green Dragons are 4-0 in the division with their only loss coming against powerful St. John Vianney who is ranked second in the shore.  Brick will host Southern tonight while the two teams chasing them in the division try and remain within a game.

Streaking Brick Memorial has won four straight since a season-opening loss to their crosstown rivals and tonight will entertain Toms River East while Central Regional plays host to Toms River South.  With a win tonight the Golden Eagles could set the stage for an October 27th meeting with Brick to determine the division title.

The race in Class “B South” is down to two teams with both Point Boro and Barnegat undefeated in the division and facing key challenges tomorrow afternoon.  The Panthers visit Lakewood in a game that has determined championships the previous two years.

However the Piners suffered a rash of early-season injuries and while their 1-3 record is not impressive they remain a dangerous opponent for 5-0 Point Boro.  Same for Barnegat who takes a 3-0 division record into Lacey against a Lions team looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The young Bengals with wins in their next two games could set the stage for a winner-take-all trip to Point Boro on November 3rd.
