PLAINFIELD — After initially trying to flee the state, a Plainfield man has admitted to hitting his 4-month-old son in the head several times in 2013, ultimately resulting in the boy's death.

Michael Bell, 39, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated manslaughter for the death of his son Zion, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced. Zion Bell was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital after police found him at the home. He died from his injuries two days later.

Park said the investigation was conducted by the Homicide Task Force from the prosecutor's office and the Plainfield Police Division, as well as the Union County Sheriff's Office Identification Unit.

With the help of the Amtrak Police and the New Jersey Transit Police, Michael Bell was found the day after the attack on an Iowa-bound bus from Newark Penn Station.

Bell is scheduled to be sentenced on April 21 and is expected to be sentenced to 25 years in prison with 85 percent to be served before he is eligible for parole.
