Picking A Skill For Life

Sometimes things just pop into my head with no rhyme or reason.

Such was the case when I started pondering the question about talent and skill and asked myself if there was one, just one that I could possess what would it be.

Let me take this a step further and put it this way.  If you woke up today and were, let’s say, 18 years old and could pick one skill or talent which you would have for life what would it be?

Of course like most 18-year old boys I would likely have picked something to do with sports but this talent wish does not change your physical stature.  So in my case I would be wasting a pick on being a football or basketball player because my body type would not work. Unless I wanted to be a kicker.

However in this fantasy of mine I strongly considered being able to play golf very well because life on the PGA Tour for those who are good is not a bad way to go.  I mean they were in San Diego last week and Scottsdale, Arizona this week not too shabby during winter.

However if I removed sports from the list of options it would probably come down to being able to sing or play some type of musical instrument. Remember in this fantasy you can only have one talent.  Having a great voice, whether you sing pop, rock, country, opera, whatever can take you a long way and obviously have the ability to earn a lot of money.

However I would not mind being able to play the piano like Steve Wonder, Elton John or even Billy Joel even without singing they are pretty talented.  I did take guitar lessons for a brief period when I was about 13 and I was awful.

Being an artist is another talent that you might consider although I’ve never really understood art.  Some paintings that are worth millions of dollars look like something a 10-year old could do but I guess it’s a case of “beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.”  I mean honestly is the Mona Lisa really that great a painting?

However I’ve seen works of local artists that simply blow me away and wishing I had that talent.

Obviously this is all a fantasy because whether it be 18 years old or in my 60s talent and skill is something I’ve never had unless you count the ability to come up with two minutes of material on a day when I had nothing.
