The unofficial start to the summer season in places like Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant Beach has been for years Palm Sunday weekend.  Weather permitting that was when locals and visitors alike would head over to the boardwalk for Easter egg hunts on the beach and it was usually when the amusement parks in both locations would open for the first time.

Obviously none of that took place last year because of the pandemic…for all intents and purposes Easter was pretty much a non-event in 2020.  While the traditional egg hunts with kids digging in the sand are a casualty once again Seaside Heights is offering what they are calling a “high-tech” version of the popular event.  The only thing you’ll need to touch is your smartphone and you can participate this Saturday and Sunday as well as next weekend.  For details visit www.exit82.com/egghunt.

In what is surely a sign that spring has arrived Jenkinson’s Amusement Park in Point Pleasant Beach as well as Casino Pier in Seaside Heights will both be open at noon this weekend and weather permitting there will be rides operating although likely on some limited basis.  Both will also be hosting job fairs on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4pm for those 16 years and older for a variety of summer positions, including those at Breakwater Beach.  Then on Easter weekend the popular attractions will offer a variety of discount tickets as part of an annual sale they do every year.

Unfortunately for the second year in a row COVID has curtailed the Easter parades but clearly this year will be better than a year ago when most people just stayed in their homes.  Local restaurants will offer indoor and outdoor dining options for Easter Sunday and many people now feel comfortable to enjoy a holiday get together with their families.  We may even see on Facebook and Instagram pictures of those dressed in their Easter finest…something that was badly missing a year ago.

We are not there yet but certainly am getting a lot closer.  Saturday will be sunny and in the 60’s and seeing activity on the boardwalks will certainly be a reminder that summer is not far away.
